Overview

Three Steps On George, nestled in the heart of Launceston at 158 George Street, offers a warm and inviting experience that blends the charm of a classic British pub with the vibrant pulse of local Tasmanian culture. This restaurant is more than just a place to eat; it’s a hub where locals gather to unwind, share stories, and enjoy hearty meals in a laid-back atmosphere.

The space itself is rich with character. From the cozy upstairs dining to the lively bar area featuring a pool table, it strikes a perfect balance between casual comfort and spirited socializing. The décor, peppered with eclectic ornaments, complements the venue’s historic vibe, while ambient lighting could enhance its traditional pub feel, as some patrons have noted.

The menu celebrates robust, comforting dishes crafted with local Tasmanian ingredients. Signature mains like the tender lamb shoulder, succulent pork belly paired with crisp pear and rocket salad, and the indulgent chicken parmigiana showcase a deep respect for bold flavors and generous portions. Seafood lovers will appreciate the crumbed Tasmanian scallops, while meat enthusiasts can indulge in items like the venison pie or the hearty meat lovers pizza. The inclusion of lighter starters and shareable plates—such as loaded wedges and stuffed capsicums—make it easy to enjoy a casual meal or gather in groups.

Three Steps On George clearly targets a broad audience, from families enjoying kid-friendly options like the kids steak, to travelers and locals seeking a relaxed evening with good food and a local beer. The proximity to the Quality Hotel Colonial Launceston adds a layer of convenience for visitors wanting to dine and stay all in one spot. Friendly, knowledgeable staff enhance the experience by offering travel tips and attentive service, contributing to a welcoming vibe that invites repeat visits.

Customer experiences echo the venue’s appeal: many praise the genuine atmosphere where people play snooker, sip drinks, and savor some of Tasmania’s finest pub fare. While the food consistently wins accolades for its flavor and quality, some patrons have felt the pace of service could be paced more leisurely to better match the relaxed setting. Nonetheless, the warm and lively environment, combined with a robust menu and authentic hospitality, make Three Steps On George a standout destination in Launceston’s dining scene.

This is an absolute gem of a find. Loved the atmosphere as people were playing snooker drinking and enjoying. Got a seat upstairs and had lot of food and drinks. Filled with locals mostly but absolutely loved all the food especially the pie. Best food I had during my entire vacation for Tasmania.

Cool place to dine or just sit at the bar with some local beers on tap Pub has plenty of character, with a variety of ornaments around the walls. Ground level + upstairs dining, pool table and good range on the menu. Ptetty much attached to the Quality Hotel Colonial Launceston makes it very convenient to eat & stay. Service & food was good, friendly staff!

The food was beautiful the service was lovely the waitresses gave us plenty of travel tips as we’re from fnq the lights were a tad bright, I think dimming the lights a tad would increase the old British pub atmosphere

We felt like we were being pushed along to finish our meal (food was great) and leave. We were not asked for a drinks refill and had to ask the staff for more drinks. We were the last but it was still before 2000 hrs and was comfortable and not ready to go. Pity. Looks like a rocking venue, food was yummy.

Enjoyed a pub style dinner and a tasty deal 2 for $30 cocktails on a freezing cold night and the wood fire was going and we were seated right next to it! Good vibes and as a plus, this place has a pool table!
